This photograph shows a staged shell casing on which is crushed a cigarette butt (that happened to be, ironically, from the Japanese brand PEACE).
After the war, my Bosnian family used shell casings as ashtray. They sat on dinner tables, among laughter, loud music, tears and thick cigarette smoke.
This piece looks at how trauma lingers—not erased, not healed, just lived with.
